Alvernia University Associate Professor of Theology Kevin Godfrey, Ph.D. will present the Cardinal Newman Lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in the Performance Hall of the De Mattias Fine Arts Center. Godfrey will speak on reconciliation in the life and thought of Blessed John Henry Newman.
The event is sponsored by The Gerber Institute for Catholic Studies at Newman University in celebration of Cardinal Newman Week, and is free and open to the public.
Dr. Godfrey has published articles and delivered scholarly papers at national and international conferences on a variety of topics in Historical Theology and Christian Spirituality. His most sustained areas of interest for research are the Franciscan Tradition and the theology of John Henry Cardinal Newman. He has served as convener and moderator of the Thought of John Henry Newman Group of the Catholic Theological Society of America for the last seven years. He is a member of the Editorial Board and also Book Review Editor for the Journal of the Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities.

As part of the Cardinal Newman Week events, Edward J. Miller, Ph.D., S.T.D., will give a presentation titled “On Being an Alma Mater: Newman’s Experience and Ours.” The talk will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, in the Dugan-Gorges Conference Center.
Dr. Miller, Professor of Religious Studies at Gwynedd-Mercy College (Pennsylvania), has published his theological research in numerous books, including Newman: Doctor of the Church (Oxford, 2007), Discourse and Context: An Interdisciplinary Study of John Henry Newman (Carbondale, 1993), Critical Essays on John Henry Newman (Victoria BC, 1992), and John Henry Newman on the Idea of Church (Shepherdstown, 1987).

The Gerber Institute was pleased with the presentation by noted Catholic author and columnist E.J. Dionne who spoke at Newman University on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. The topic of Mr. Dionne’s talk was healthcare reform. The author of several books, Mr. Dionne is a regular columnist for the Washington Post and appears frequently as a political commentator on radio and television. Based in Washington, DC, Mr. Dionne is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and an instructor at Georgetown University.
Gerber Institute will present Timothy Kirk, assistant professor of philosophy at the City University of New York-York College in New York, NY, USA, where he specializes in philosophy of nursing and healthcare ethics with an emphasis on hospice and palliative care. In addition to his appointment at CUNY, he serves as chair of the hospice and palliative care affinity group of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, on the executive board of the International Philosophy of Nursing Society, and as vice chair of the ethics committee of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
Kirk will be on the Newman campus November 11th for presentations to nursing students, pre-med and science students. He will also be addressing the Traditions and Transitions students, faculty and facilitators. At 7:00pm he will present his public lecture, Palliative Care for Serious Illness: Supporting the Reconciliation of a Fractured Self. The 7:00pm session is free and open to the public.
